commentary
The "piece of crap" that the writer refers to is the ROKS Baekdusan or Pak Tu San (Republic of Korea Patrol Craft, PC-701, formerly USS PC-823). She was the first warship for the new republic's Navy; and was purchased with funds donated by sailors in the Republic of Korea Navy. Prior to delivery its officers were trained at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point. The photo showing its aerials and bridge dates from the training period in late 1949, just prior to her cruise to Pearl Harbor for re-armament in March of 1950 and eventual service in the Korean War.
